Zijin Mining’s African Copper Hub Hit by Floods: 2025 Output Target Faces 28% Cut

Date Issued:2025-07-01

Zijin Mining has announced a significant production setback at its Kamoa-Kakula copper mine in Africa, the continent’s largest, after a flooding incident slashed 2025 output targets by 28%. The accident, triggered by underground pumping facility damage from late-May mine earthquakes, has forced the company to revise its annual copper production plan from 520,000–580,000 tons to 370,000–420,000 tons.

Accident Details and Recovery Efforts
  • Causal Chain: Multiple mine earthquakes in the Kakula section caused roof collapses, damaging deep drainage systems and leading to rapid groundwater inundation in the eastern mining area.
  • Current Progress: The western zone, elevated at 1,110 meters, has restarted north/south mining operations. High-power water pumps are being installed for full drainage by August 2025.
Impact on Zijin’s Growth Strategy

Kamoa-Kakula, which contributed 194,700 tons of equity production in 2024, was slated to drive 75% of Zijin’s 2025 output growth (143,000-ton planned increase). The shortfall now threatens the company’s annual target of 1.15 million tons of mineral copper, as other mines like Chukalu-Peji and Kolwezi cannot offset the loss.

Mine Area Original 2025 Plan Current Status
Kamoa-Kakula +143,000 tons Output may lag 2024
Chukalu-Peji (Sey) Unchanged Unaffected
Kolwezi (Congo) +15,000 tons Unaffected
Emergency Response Measures

Zijin has activated a three-pronged plan:

  1. Western Zone Restart: Accelerating mining in the western area’s north/south sectors.
  2. Stockpiled Ore Utilization: Deploying 3.8 million tons of surface ore (3.2% grade) to maintain feedstock.
  3. High-Grade Block Development: Launching ultra-high copper grade projects for short-term output boosts.

While the Phase III concentrator and underground mining infrastructure remain intact, the 1.15-million-ton annual target hangs in the balance. The 44.44%-owned asset is expected to reduce Zijin’s equity production by 44,000–93,000 tons in 2025.
